10 Principles of Fair Trade

EPHAS is a member of the Fair Trade Association.

We are committed to following the principles of fair trade as set out by the World Fair Trade Organisation, for a full description of these principles please visit the WFTO website.

WFTO prescribes 10 Principles that Fair Trade Organizations must follow in their day-to-day work and carries out monitoring to ensure these principles are upheld:

Principle One: Creating Opportunities for Economically Disadvantaged Producers

Poverty reduction through trade is a key part of EPHAS’ aims. We support marginalized small producers and seek to enable them to move from income insecurity and poverty to economic self-sufficiency and ownership.

Principle Two: Transparency and Accountability

EPHAS is transparent in our management and commercial relations. We seek to find appropriate, participatory ways to involve producers in relevant decision-making processes. Our communication channels are good and open at all levels of the supply chain.

Principle Three: Fair Trading Practices

EPHAS trades with concern for the social, economic and environmental well-being of marginalized small producers and does not maximize profit at their expense.

Principle Four: Payment of a Fair Price

A fair price is one that has been mutually agreed by all through dialogue and participation, which provides fair pay to the producers and can also be sustained by the market.

Principle Five: Ensuring no Child Labor and Forced Labor

EPHAS’ overseas partners adhere to the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, and national / local law on the employment of children. They ensure that there is no forced labour in their workforce.  Any involvement of children in the production of Fair Trade products (including learning a traditional art or craft) is always disclosed and monitored and does not adversely affect the children's well-being, security, educational requirements and need for play.

Principle Six: Commitment to Non Discrimination, Gender Equity and Women’s Economic Empowerment, and Freedom of Association

EPHAS and our overseas partners do not discriminate in hiring, remuneration, access to training, promotion, termination or retirement based on race, caste, national origin, religion, disability, gender, sexual orientation, union membership, political affiliation, HIV/Aids status or age.

Principle Seven: Ensuring Good Working Conditions

EPHAS’ overseas partners provide a safe and healthy working environment for employees and / or members. It complies, at a minimum, with national and local laws and ILO conventions on health and safety.

Working hours and conditions for employees and / or members (and any homeworkers) comply with conditions established by national and local laws and ILO conventions.

Principle Eight: Providing Capacity Building

EPHAS and our overseas partners seek to increase positive developmental impacts for small, marginalized producers through Fair Trade, seeking to develop the skills and capabilities of employees or members.

Principle Nine: Promoting Fair Trade

EPHAS raises awareness of the aim of Fair Trade and of the need for greater justice in world trade through Fair Trade. EPHAS seeks to provide our customers with information about ourselves, our products, and our overseas partners. Honest advertising and marketing techniques are always used.

Principle Ten: Respect for the Environment

EPHAS’ overseas partners maximize the use of raw materials from sustainably managed sources in their ranges, buying locally when possible. They use production technologies that seek to reduce energy consumption and where possible use renewable energy technologies that minimize greenhouse gas emissions. They seek to minimize the impact of their waste stream on the environment.

About Ephas

About EPHAS

EPHAS stands for Every Product Has A Story...

...because everything that we sell has a story behind it. The story of the woman who made it. Whether she has been freed from the sex trade, or freed from hunger or oppression, she has been given the opportunity for a better life for herself and her family by making these products.  By purchasing these products, you are becoming part of the story. The story of HOPE.

We source products direct from our partner organisation, all of whom prescribe to the principles of fair trade as set by the World Fair Trade Organisation.  This means that you can be sure that, not only is everyone involved in making the products paid a fair wage, but the products are produced with care for the environment, no child labour has been used, and that every product sold helps to see the women able to provide for themselves and their families.

We have a beautiful range of gift and home wares that will not only appeal to a conscious consumer, but to anyone looking for a unique, handmade gift that tells a story.

You can read more about the women who make each product in the description of the product.  If you'd like more information about their work, please don't hesitate to contact us.

All products are handmade - we're sure you'll find the perfect unique gift at EPHAS!

Host a Party - EPHAS

Host a Freedom party

At EPHAS we love sharing the stories of the amazing women behind our beautiful fair trade products.  Freedom parties are a great way to get your friends, family and colleagues together so they can hear why you’re passionate about fair trade and have a chance to hear some of these life changing stories.  So why not gather your friends in your home, office, school or church and give your friends the chance to ultimately purchase some fantastic products, hear some great stories, and then take both home to share with their family and friends too!?

We’re available to join you for your Freedom party in Sydney and the Central Coast NSW.  If you’re outside Sydney or the Central Coast but would like to host a party you can purchase a ‘do it yourself’ party pack including invitation ideas, story DVD (choice of different projects), order forms and sample products* for you to show your guests.

Freedom Party Testimonials

“I really enjoyed hosting an EPHAS afternoon. I felt of real sense of joy at being able to facilitate two worlds coming together: the women who live in my community in the relative comforts of a first world country and the women in real need living in poorer parts of the world in very different conditions to us. We saw some of these women on video (a heart-warming experience to share together) and then could see, hold and buy the very things that these women had made—things that were enabling these women to have a new life. What a wonderful thing to be a part of!

"Our EPHAS  rep was fantastic and everyone really enjoyed meeting her and hearing her speak. I heartily recommend hosting an EPHAS party, and being able to introduce your friends to gifts they can buy that give twice, both the recipients of the gifts and to the very special women who made them. "

Steph, Castle Cove, NSW

“I was looking for a practical way of making a difference and so when I heard about EPHAS and the work that it supports I decided to host an EPHAS Freedom Party. Hosting an EPHAS party gave me the opportunity to reach out to women in need in a practical way and have fun doing it.  All I had to do was to invite my friends and put on an afternoon tea. Our EPHAS hostess did the rest.

They gave a short talk and showed us a DVD on the projects where the products sold by EPHAS are made. This was informative and helped us to catch the vision of what EPHAS stands for.  It also helped us to feel a part of a bigger picture and showed us how we can input positively into the lives of others.

EPHAS has a diverse range of products of a high quality, at good prices. My friends loved what they bought and some even said they wanted to host a party as well. If you want to make a positive and practical difference in the lives of others I’d definitely recommend hosting an EPHAS Freedom Party."

From our customers

  • EPHAS offers fantastic customer service, postage is reasonable and quick and the products are simply beautiful. It is easy to promote such gorgeous pieces when they have a story behind them like EPHAS does, and my customers appreciate my sourcing products that are Fair Trade and align with their beliefs. (So not only are the products amazing, but they also sell well.) Wouldn't hesitate to recommend purchasing EPHAS products

  • I have been thinking about your products a lot. They have struck a cord with me. The story cards were very useful and helped me to clearly understand what Starfish Project does and the important work they are doing. I am really glad to have met EPHAS - thank you for introducing me to your products and giving me the opportunity to support such a meaningful cause.

  • I am always really excited with the new jewellery designs that we order in from EPHAS. The entire range has been very popular with our customers and ever since it landed at One Village, it has been flying out of the shop! We have now increased our range of Starfish Project jewellery to keep up with the demands of our customers. We feel very fortunate to share in the journey with EPHAS to create a brighter future for the women who are behind the beautiful jewellery. Thank you for always providing us with excellent customer care.
