How to Grow Leek at Home

I love getting out in the garden when the Perth weather suits. Let’s talk about vegetable growing, in particular how to grow Leek in your Perth backyard.

(Whilst most of this guide suits anywhere in Australia, check local conditions for growing months if you live outside Perth.)

It is incredibly rewarding to look out on a neatly weeded and mulched vegetable garden with freshly planted veggies. Growing and providing your family and friends with home grown veggies is such a pleasure.

When should you plant Leek?

The best months to plant Leek in Perth are Aug-Apr. You can plant using Transplant, ideally when the soil temperature is around 10-20 degrees celcius and the air is around 5-25 degree celcius.

Ideal soil temp: 10-20c

Can Leek grow in pots?

Yes, they can grow in pots. Be mindful of the size they grow to.

The great thing about planting Leek in pots is that you can move them around easily, should they need more or less sun, or are getting attacked by pests. In some cases, you can even grow Leek indoors, as long as the position can get enough sun.

How much sun should Leek get?

You will discover that Leek thrives on Full sun.

Some gardens get more shade than others, and your direction north etc varies. Try the ideal position first, and if the Leek isn’t growing well enough, maybe try a more or less sunnier spot.

Gardening simply does not allow one to be mentally old, because too many hopes and dreams are yet to be realized.

How often should you water Leek?

Leek really enjoys when it gets Regular watering.

They prefer soil that is Well-drained.

When can you harvest?

Being a Monthly vegetable, the ideal time to harvest your Leek crop is around Mar-Sept. Play it by ear though, and just see how your plant(s) do this season.

If you are getting serious with your vegetable garden, you may wish to grow Leek in rows. You’ll need to allow around 30-45 centimetres between rows, and 10-15 centimetres between each seedling or seed.

Space between rows: 30-45 cm

Space between seedlings: 10-15 cm

Keep the seeds!
