How to Grow Passionfruit at Home

I love getting out in the garden when the Perth weather suits. Let’s talk about vegetable growing, in particular how to grow Passionfruit in your Perth backyard.

When should you plant Passionfruit?

The best months to plant Passionfruit in Perth are Aug-Nov. You can plant using Seed, ideally when the soil temperature is around 10-20 degrees celcius and the air is around 15-30 degree celcius.

Can Passionfruit grow in pots?

Yes, they can grow in pots. Be mindful of the size they grow to.

The great thing about planting Passionfruit in pots is that you can move them around easily, should they need more or less sun, or are getting attacked by pests. In some cases, you can even grow Passionfruit indoors, as long as the position can get enough sun.

How much sun should Passionfruit get?

You will discover that Passionfruit thrives on Full sun but sheltered from strong winds.

Some gardens get more shade than others, and your direction north etc varies. Try the ideal position first, and if the Passionfruit isn’t growing well enough, maybe try a more or less sunnier spot.

It’s difficult to think anything but pleasant thoughts while eating a homegrown tomato.

How often should you water Passionfruit?

Passionfruit really enjoys when it gets Regular watering.

They prefer soil that is Well-drained.

When can you harvest?

Being a 3-5 years vegetable, the ideal time to harvest your Passionfruit crop is around spring most areas, dry season in tropics. Play it by ear though, and just see how your plant(s) do this season.

If you are getting serious with your vegetable garden, you may wish to grow Passionfruit in rows. You’ll need to allow around 80 centimetres between rows, and 100 centimetres between each seedling or seed.

Space between rows: 80 cm

Space between seedlings: 100 cm
